Waltham, 21st July 2010; During the week of July 12th – 16th, MPS hosted a camp for TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) at Belmont Street Fields, East Bridgewater.
The goal of TOPSoccer, a US Youth Soccer program, is to enable any boy or girl with a mental or physical disability to play soccer in a safe and fun environment. Four MPS senior staff members and 30 members of the MPS Crusaders / Lady Crusaders Premier Team program volunteered their time to coach and mentor athletes. The 45 participating athletes were each matched to a coach that guided them through training sessions and small-sided play.
“MPS has presented a TOPsoccer summer camp in East Bridgewater for a number of years now and the event is highly popular amongst MPS Coaches, junior coaches from the MPS Premier Team program and for all the athletes who participate,” said MPS Crusaders Director Graham Munro. “The week was a fantastic experience for all involved and we look forward to continuing to offer this program next year and beyond. We have had tremendous feedback from parents of the athletes who participated in the hugely enjoyable week.”
TOPSoccer is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities. Through TOPSoccer, the athletes learn more about the game and participate at levels suited for their skills. MPS presented a structured curriculum for all athletes in attendance which was both fun and educational. Each participant was also awarded an MPS camp T-shirt and sack pack.
“The TOPSoccer camp was an extremely rewarding experience to participate in and direct,” said Munro. “At MPS we aim to continue to provide opportunities to all players in Eastern Massachusetts and we look forward to returning next year and hopefully offering the opportunity to an increased number of athletes.”
