MPS Portland Phoenix Advance to Playoffs
Phoenix Close Regular Season with Two Wins

Waltham, 28th July 2010; The Maine Premier Soccer Portland Phoenix will advance to the PDL Eastern Conference Playoffs following two decisive victories this past weekend.

The Phoenix defeated the Western Mass Pioneers 3-0 on Saturday and the Long Island Rough Riders 5-1 on Sunday. The two wins earned the team six points and improved their ranking to second within the Northeast Division, just two points shy of the top-ranked Ottawa Fury.

On Saturday the 31st, the Phoenix will travel to Ottawa to face Reading United AC, the Mid Atlantic Division champions. The game winner will then compete against the winner of the Ottawa Fury and Ironbound Express match.

“The team has overcome challenges throughout the season to reach the top of the Northeast Division rankings” said Head Coach Paul Baber. “The victories in the last two regular season games further demonstrated the team’s tenacity and determination to earn a playoff berth. Though we only needed four points to advance, the two wins secured our position in post-season play and have given us good momentum as we prepare to face a challenging opponent this weekend.”

Led by Head Coach and Maine Premier Soccer General Manager Paul Baber, the Phoenix earned a 10-2-4 regular season record during their debut season in the PDL. The team also maintained an undefeated record at home.
