Waltham, January 2008;
Mass Premier Soccer are pleased to
announce a partnership between the Boston Renegades of the W-League and the
Boston Breakers of the new women's professional soccer league that will begin
play in 2009.
The relationship will begin immediately as the Renegades will assist the
Breakers with identification of potential Breakers players, and the Breakers
coaching staff will assist in identifying 2007 collegiate players for the
W-League team. The Renegades will be looking to bring in a number of prominent
college juniors for the 2008 W-League campaign who would be Breakers prospects
upon graduation.
Once the Breakers start training, the Renegades and Breakers partnership will
mirror the European model of a cohesive structure, as the teams expect to train
together and play doubleheaders. This will allow the coaching staffs of both
teams to create a unique training environment for both sets of players. On
game-day, the anticipation of double-header match-ups creates a wonderful
prospect for women's soccer fans in Boston.
"We are delighted to have formed such a close relationship with the Boston
Breakers," said Renegades Head Coach Darren Gallagher. "This partnership
completes the top of the MPS player development pyramid as players will now have
a professional team to aspire towards once they graduate from college."
"The Renegades have a long and outstanding tradition of recruiting the nation's
finest collegiate prospects," said Boston Breakers Managing Partner Michael
Stoller. "We are excited to work together with Mass Premier Soccer to the
betterment of women's soccer in the New England."
Mass Premier Soccer and the Boston Breakers are continuing conversations with
the NCAA and with the Compliance Departments of leading colleges to ensure that
the relationship between the two clubs does not jeopardize the college
eligibility of any student-athletes.
