Waltham, January 25th 2008;
Mass Premier Soccer has announced that the club will begin to associate the MPS
brand with the first teams in an effort to make these teams more representative
of the club as a whole. The newly named MPS Cape Cod Crusaders and the MPS
Boston Renegades will take the field in the
PDL and the W-League respectively when their seasons start in early May.
MPS has also adjusted the
wording of the club’s Mission Statement. In order to fully reflect the
philosophy of the club, the word development has been added to the
description of the organization’s aims and values. The new mission statement
reads;
The mission of Massachusetts Premier Soccer is to enhance the soccer
experience of players and coaches in
Massachusetts.
We provide our players the opportunity to develop as athletes and as people by
fostering an identity of excellence. We strive to produce players who can
compete at the highest level of soccer throughout the world.
“We are delighted to add MPS to
the name of our first team squads and I feel its important to review the club’s
mission and goals annually,” said Director of Coaching
Peter Bradley.
“The Crusaders and Renegades are recognized nationally for their success and
their ability to move players on to the professional game. In 2008 alone, the
Crusaders had two players selected in the
MLS Superdraft while the Renegades established a partnership
with the Boston Breakers of the newly founded Women’s Professional Soccer
League. We think it’s important that people are aware of the connection between
our first teams and our youth programs.”
In 2007, both first teams
fielded a number of products of the club’s player development system. Edens
Chery (Brockton,
MA), Jessey Fernandez (Hanson,
MA) and Brandin McClay (Taunton,
MA) all featured in
Paul Baber’s Northeast Division
Championship squad. In addition, Brianna Wilson-Byrne (Wellesley, MA)
and Becky Westbury (Northbridge, MA) each played a role in Darren Gallagher’s
side which narrowly missed out on the playoffs.
“It is important that we
continue to have the best players in our youth development system progress into
the club’s first teams,” said
MPS Cape Cod Crusaders Head Coach
Paul Baber. “In 2008 we expect
to see players such as David Donohue (Reading,
MA) and Andrew Olsen (Norwell,
MA) feature in the Crusaders first team after being developed
in our Premier program. At some point in the near future we would like to see
the 1st teams made up of mostly our own players.”
The MPS Cape Cod Crusaders and
the MPS Boston Renegades first team squads will both take the field on May 10th
for their 2008 home season opener.
The Renegades will play host to
Jersey Sky Blue at Bowditch Stadium, Framingham while the Crusaders will host
New Hampshire Phantoms at
Mass
Maritime
Academy,
Buzzards Bay. Both kick off times are TBA.
