Waltham, January 2008;
Mass Premier Soccer are delighted to
announce that Crusaders First Team player Andrew Wright has signed a
professional contract with English Coca Cola League Championship side
Scunthorpe United.
Wright will ply
his trade in the second tier of English soccer, one league below the FA
Premiership.
The midfielder
played a pivotal role in the 2007 Crusaders side, which clinched a fourth
consecutive Northeast Division title, while earning team MVP honors in the
process.
"We are
delighted for Andrew to begin his professional career just one step below the
English Premiership," said Crusaders Head Coach Paul Baber. "Our goal at
MPS is to move our players to the highest levels of the game and once again we
have proved to be a conveyor belt into the professional ranks."
Wright recently
completed a four year career at West Virginia University and opted against
attending the MLS combine in favor of inking a professional deal in his native
England. The 22-year-old put pen to paper after impressing manager Nigel
Adkins during a brief trial period.
"We have given
Andrew a contract until the end of the season and he will be a boost to the
squad," said Adkins. "He is six-feet tall, has got two good feet and plays
in a few different positions."
Wright joins a
long list of players who have moved from the PDL Crusaders to the professional
ranks across the world in recent years. Others include Troy Perkins (DC
United / 2006 MLS All‐Star), Joseph Ngwenya (Houston Dynamo) and
Chris Joyce (Odd Grenland – Norway).
