Defensive Central Midfielder

These are the link players from defense to offense. They are responsible for keeping the balance in the middle of the field and should always be available to receive the ball. Their movements are in conjunction with each other – if one advances in attack the other must adopt a holding position in the middle of the field to prevent counterattacking options.

  • Awareness – must be very smart and disciplined players. Need to be constantly reading the game and assessing their position in relation to teammates.
  • Ability to play in tight spaces – must have an excellent 1st touch and range of passing short and long.
  • Defensive skill set – must be able to tackle and head the ball with purpose.
  • Work rate – must be very fit.
  • Communication – must be excellent leaders.
